The Trops Nerja thrower was crowned national runner-up this Saturday at the Ciudad de Málaga stadium, right on her 23rd birthday. Her best throw was 54.85 metres.
The Malagueña athlete Naomey Ezenwa won the silver medal at the Spanish Athletics Championship taking place this weekend at the Ciudad de Málaga stadium. The discus thrower from Trops Nerja achieved national runner-up status on a day marked by intense heat and celebrating her 23rd birthday competing in front of her home crowd.
Ezenwa, who currently resides in Castellón, completed six throws on a sweltering morning in the Malagueña capital. Her best mark was 54.85 metres, far from the 58.79 metres she achieved a couple of months ago when she broke the Andalusian record. The athlete acknowledged that she struggled to get going and that her last throw, which seemed promising, hit the protective cage, leaving her with a bittersweet feeling.
“It was a competition where I found it a bit difficult to start, I gradually improved. The thing is, the last throw, which I think was the best and looked good, hit the cage and I was left with a bit of a feeling of helplessness. But well, competitions are like that; it's six throws and you have to make them count,” the Malagueña explained in the mixed zone.
The silver medal, however, does not open the doors to the European Championships in Birmingham, one of the goals she had set for this season. Ezenwa admitted that the planning included that event, but she could not compete in other international events due to issues with the national calendar. “It's a shame because apart from the championship experience, it's always an opportunity to improve, to see the best competing, to learn. But well, as I always say, I am a slow cooker. I go at my own pace, but a sure pace. So when I need to arrive, I will,” she stated philosophically.
The athlete, who has just completed her Psychology degree, is now considering a sabbatical year to focus on athletics. Her main medium-term goal is the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, for which she hopes to achieve the qualifying standard or enter through the world ranking. “According to the projection there, the level will be there. Now it’s just about proving it on the track, and that’s it,” she summarised.
Ezenwa will compete next weekend in Leiria (Portugal) to conclude her season. There she will aim to improve her marks and wrap up a year in which, despite not securing the European ticket, she has demonstrated her talent in discus throwing.
The performance of the Malagueña is one of the highlights of the championship taking place in Málaga, with the presence of the best national athletes. The local audience was able to enjoy Ezenwa's medal, as she competed in her hometown on a very special day.
