Málaga Regional University Hospital has initiated research aimed at improving the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion, one of the most common conditions in Pulmonology. This project is supported by a Research Grant from the Official College of Physicians of Málaga and will be carried out in collaboration with the Medical Oncology Service of the centre.
Study Objective
The initiative seeks to validate an ultrasound scale based on eight parameters, allowing for early estimation of the likelihood that a pleural effusion is malignant. This approach aims to facilitate a more streamlined diagnostic process and assist doctors in making more accurate treatment decisions for patients.
Importance of Early Diagnosis
Malignant pleural effusion accounts for 20 to 25% of pleural effusion cases, and its early identification is crucial for guiding treatment and avoiding unnecessary invasive procedures. Although chest ultrasound can detect signs of malignancy, there has not yet been a validated scale that systematically organizes these findings objectively. The new PMUS-8 model aims to address this need and improve the initial assessment of patients with this condition.
Antonio Dorado, head of the Pulmonology service, emphasizes that this project is not only a step forward in detecting oncological disease but also represents recognition of the teamwork among the hospital's professionals. The goal is to create an accessible tool that optimizes diagnosis and promotes effective collaboration between Pulmonology, Oncology, and other specialties.
The Interventional Pulmonology Unit of this hospital is recognized by the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) as a specialized unit with excellence criteria, underscoring the centre's commitment to quality in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases.
