The Junta de Andalucía has allocated a total of 50 million euros to the Free Textbook Programme for the upcoming academic year. This initiative will benefit over 171,800 students in compulsory education at public and subsidised schools in Málaga.
Programme details.
For the 2026/27 school year, all textbooks for 1st and 2nd grade of Primary Education will be renewed. Additionally, the provision for students with special educational needs will be updated.
Families with children in these grades will receive a book voucher that will include a list of textbooks, which they can exchange at the bookstore of their choice. This programme is established for all students in Primary and Compulsory Secondary Education in publicly funded schools, meaning both public and subsidised schools.
Management updates.
A significant improvement introduced by the Ministry of Education is the new functionality in the Séneca system, which now allows for the tagging of books using a barcode. This innovation simplifies the process and prevents it from having to be done manually.
The free provision of textbooks is a right recognised in the Statute of Autonomy, supported by Law 17/2007 on Education in Andalucía. The system is based on a loan scheme, where the books are the property of the educational administration and remain in the schools after the course ends, to be used by other students in subsequent years.
In addition to the financial support it provides for families, this programme aims to educate students about the importance of taking care of school materials and to promote responsibility regarding the investment in their education.
