The Socialist Municipal Group will present a motion to the council to adapt a municipal plot on Alcalá Street as public parking, a local demand due to the lack of spaces.

The Socialist Municipal Group of Antequera will defend a motion in the next council meeting to request the conditioning of a municipal plot located behind Alcalá Street in the San Miguel neighbourhood as public parking. The initiative, as explained by councillor Francisco Calderón, aims to respond to one of the main demands of the local residents.

Calderón pointed out that San Miguel is one of the most populated neighbourhoods in Antequera and that the growth experienced in recent years has exacerbated parking problems. The plot, which is owned by the municipality, is already being used spontaneously by residents, but it lacks pavement, signage, lighting, and proper organisation of the parking spaces.

An urgent need due to works in the neighbourhood

The councillor explained that the works being carried out on various streets in the neighbourhood, such as Pasillas Street, have increased the need for parking spaces, forcing many residents to use this plot. The lack of parking is one of the most pressing issues for residents, who see it becoming increasingly difficult to find a place to leave their car.

The socialist proposal suggests acting on the land to provide conditions that allow for its use with greater guarantees. According to Calderón, this is an urgent and necessary action that would improve the quality of life for residents.

Compatible with future facilities

The PSOE argues that the conditioning of the parking lot would not prevent the development of other projects planned for this land. Calderón recalled that both the residents' association and his municipal group have previously suggested the incorporation of green areas, picnic areas, paths, or more trees. There is also a proposal to create an area for motorhomes nearby.

However, he insisted that “any future action must maintain this parking area due to the need that exists in the neighbourhood.” The motion will be debated in the next municipal council meeting, where the PSOE hopes to gain the support of the governing team to push forward a measure they consider priority for the residents of San Miguel.

If approved, the council will need to draft a project and seek funding for the works, the timeline for which has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, the residents of the neighbourhood continue to await a definitive solution to their parking problems.
