The City Council of Antequera has presented the project for the completion and modernization of the Teatro Torcal, which includes 600 new seats and an investment of around three million euros. The works will be tendered after the project is completed in a week and will last between 12 and 15 months.
The Teatro Torcal in Antequera will recover its cultural activity with a new project for completion, rehabilitation, and modernization. The public presentation took place this Thursday 1st of October in the auditorium of the Museum of the City of Antequera (MVCA), with the intervention of the Antequera architect Marcos Sánchez, responsible for the project, and the municipal technician Carlos García, who reviewed the chronology of the action. The mayor, Manolo Barón, provided statements to the media beforehand.
The project includes the renovation of the seating area and the amphitheatre, which will regain their configuration as a single hall with 600 new seats, including spaces for people with reduced mobility. The stage box and the stage and audiovisual equipment will also be completely renovated, acoustic conditioning will be improved, and lighting, communications, ventilation, and climate control systems will be updated.
The action will improve access and interior routes, differentiating the pathways for the public, artists, and technical staff, as well as the entrance for stage materials. Public restrooms will be renovated, dressing rooms will be reorganized, and evacuation, sectorization, and fire protection conditions will be reviewed. Additionally, a new lift will be installed to connect the stage, dressing rooms, and new cultural facilities, and technical access via Chimeneas street will be improved.
One of the main innovations will be the incorporation, on the first floor, of a multipurpose space for workshops, courses, and other municipal activities, which can operate independently or as support for the theatre's programming. The architect has stated that the goal is to "complete the integral recovery of the building," equipping it with the conditions of a contemporary performance space while preserving its architectural uniqueness.
The rehabilitation will pay special attention to the conservation of a building constructed between 1933 and 1934 according to a project by Antonio Sánchez Esteve, which combines rationalism and Art Deco. The drafting team has conducted over a hundred tests on the coatings to identify the original colours beneath the layers of paint, which will allow for the recovery of finishes and decorative elements and the removal of additions that alter the original configuration.
As explained during the presentation, the project has the approval of the Culture department, and the drafting team expects to complete it in approximately a week. After that, the formal delivery, municipal technical supervision, and documentation for processing the tender for the works will need to be completed. The execution forecast is 12 to 15 months from the start of the work, a timeframe that will be specified in the contracting process.
The mayor indicated that the City Council will assume the financing, estimated at around three million euros, for which there is already a budget reserve, and that the municipal budgets for 2027 will include the necessary allocation to cover it. The new project will restore the Teatro Torcal's activity as a space for theatrical performances, dance, music, audiovisual screenings, conferences, congresses, and institutional events.
